A group of upper-class Parisian friends amuse themselves by inviting people they find ludicrous to weekly dinners where the guests don't realize they are the joke of the party. When the group invites a man who has built a replica Eiffel tower with matchsticks, everything goes wrong. If you can handle the French subtitles, you will be rewarded with one of the funniest movies ever.

The Hollywood adaptation (Dinner for Shmucks, 2010) has funny moments, but it's not in the same league. The Indian remake, Bheja Fry, is unbearably dull. (Last viewed: May 2007 August 2011)

Surprisingly, this sequel is a tad funnier than the original thanks to beautiful writing and splendid acting. Too many sub plots to summarize this rich movie, in which Eddie and his friends try to break into mass retail. Only regret: the disappearance of the original Dov (Vincent Elbaz) and Sandra's dad (Richard Bohringer of Diva). This is partly offset by the entry of Gad Elmaleh. (Last viewed: February 2011)

A man lets a real estate agent convince him to buy a country home not far from Paris. He overpays, borrows too much, hires the wrong crew to renovate—and everything goes downhill from there. I didn't enjoy the first hour. All the bad things that kept happening to that poor guy made me cringe, so for me it felt more like horror than comedy. After he hits rock bottom, some real comedy starts to happen, and I had a couple of good laughs towards the end. (Last viewed: August 2014)

      1973 | France | Laughs: 3.5 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 5.6
      who was involved?

The son of a weapon industry magnate is filled with humanistic and social values, but his high-society upbringing makes him awkward when he tries to bond with the workers whose plight he aspires to improve. This little film has some good moments. It also has moments when it goes into a chaotic dimension where few can follow, with fast, loud, incoherent dialogue. Instead of amusing me, these moments put me in a slumber from which it was hard to recover. Overall, it's a "skip". (Last viewed: August 2013)
