About Jennifer

I haven't yet written a blurb about Jennifer.

Jennifer Aniston is said to have been born on Tuesday 11 February 1969, which would make her 55 years, 2 months and 14 days old (if this date is accurate and she is alive today).

When a plastic surgeon's new girlfriend finds a wedding ring in his pocket (a ring he uses as a "pick-up instrument"), he panics and tells her he's about to divorce. To convince her, he asks his assistant to play the role of his ex-wife. As the web of lies grows, the surgeon acquires "fake children", and the whole party finds itself on a "get to know one another" trip to Hawaii. The movie starts slow, but the comic power steadily builds up, so that by the halfway point you're really laughing. It's great to see Adam Sandler back in Hawaii (hello 50 First Dates). Sandler does not have a writing credit on this film, but it contains many sandlerisms, so he must have contributed his share of material. Some critics say that the movie is a weak remake of Cactus Flower (1969), but these are snobs in search of ways to flaunt their cinematographic knowledge. Don't believe them: Just Go with It is marvelously funny, Cactus Flower is not. (Last viewed: February 2012)

Life in a cubicle… the movie. Perhaps it inspired The Office, the UK TV series that spawned a US series by the same name. Very funny during the scene-setting phase. Once the movie acquires a plot, it loses steam on the laughs. For my taste, they could have made the entire movie without a plot—it would only have enhanced the study of pointlessness. On his tropical honeymoon, an insurance man gets cuckolded by his "perfect bride". Back in New York City, he bumps into a former classmate and falls for her despite her bohemian lifestyle, at odds with his obsession for computing risks. This is a very funny movie featuring Ben Stiller in his classic Meet the Parents persona. It was also the first time I saw Jennifer Aniston in a role of any substance. I will gladly watch it again. Bruce, a man who complains that God is persecuting him, finally meets God, who gives him the job of being God to see if he can do it better. After playing with his super powers, Bruce, who is only given a small section of Buffalo (New York) to start with, finds out that the job is not as easy as it sounds. This movie makes me chuckle a lot. The one scene that made me laugh out loud actually features Steve Carell in the lead, but Jim Carrey does a great job. For my taste, the ending scenes are a tad on the exalted side, but given the theme it could have been a lot worse. (Last viewed: Feb 2004 September 2012)

To smuggle cannabis from Mexico into the United States, posing as the prototypical middle-class straight white American family, an unlikely quartet cross the border in a luxurious recreational vehicle. I found this movie very funny. The only reason I didn't love it is that Jennifer Aniston gives me acne, and I wished she had been replaced by any one of the thousands of actresses capable of playing the part—Tina Fey for instance. You might not have the same skin condition. Either way, the movie is one of the best comedies of the 2013 and well worth watching. Jason Sudeikis did a great job as the lead male character, and it was a treat to see Nick Offerman, who plays Ron Swanson in Parks and Recreation.

EDIT: nine years later, the movie still entertains me but not nearly to the extent that it did on first viewing. On the other hand, this time I was chuffed to see so much of Jason Sudeikis, who since then has won the world over for his interpretation of Ted Lasso. (Season 1, I mean. In my book, season 2 is a sad joke, the character's lines are a caricature with those of the first season.)

Three friends afflicted with unbearable bosses resolve to help one another get rid of their superiors. Despite the promising premise, the film fails on execution, probably for lack of a skilled writer. The cast and production are decent, but the humor is very low-grade. That one of the three buddies has a cartoon-like strident voice doesn't help. I guess I'm allergic to loud comedians: I want the script to make me laugh, not a tone of voice that might have been funny when we were ten years old. (Last viewed: September 2012)
