I tend not to enjoy films where grown-up males spend their time talking dirty about women, such as
The 40-Year-Old Virgin. But when the dirty talkers are youngsters who have not yet experienced adult activities, as in
Superbad, I tend to chuckle. Two kids who were dreaming of their high-school graduation party somehow find themselves at a party with 25-year-olds, and in other situations in the "grown-up world". For what it is, this movie is well put together. If you have a stomach for adult themes and foul language, you will laugh at least once and smile a lot.

A group of Hollywood celebrities barricade themselves in a house on the day of the Apocalypse. Apart from a few good lines from Jonah Hill, much of the humor in this film stems from the grotesque nature of the plot and situation. Usually, when a movie is bad that is because it fails at what it sets out to do, but that is far from the case here. In essence, it seems to me that the producers tried to make a "cult movie" (something that is so bad that it becomes good for a certain audience), and they achieved that goal to perfection. If you're into cult movies you will probably enjoy this. I'm not, hence the low rating.

As this is a light-hearted movie rather than the kind of comedy that makes you laugh, it does not rank high on this site. That being said, I found the movie far more enjoyable than the IMDB rating would suggest. An American in Chili travels with some local friends to a remote beach for a psychedelic session with the San Pedro cactus. The character development is superb. Michael Cera plays an excellent jerk as he interacts with a young lady who calls herself Crystal Fairy. The movie will not appeal to all, but anyone who has attended
rainbow gatherings will be able to attest that the character and culture of Crystal Fairy are absolutely authentic—and that was enough to make me smile. I'm not qualified to say how true to type the Chileans were, but they looked very real too. In many ways this is as much a documentary as a tale. The landscapes are beautiful but I'm glad someone was doing the traveling on my behalf.
