Ben Stiller makes a great Starsky. I don't know if Owen Wilson makes a great Hutch, but he makes a great partner for Ben Stiller in this homage to the classic 1970s cop TV series. The series' formula was action with a smile. Here, the ratio has been inverted: the film is definitely a comedy, though it sports an entirely bearable drug-deal-plot as an excuse to see the two comedians do donuts in their gorgeous red-and-white Gran Torino. In the 1975, The king of San Diego's TV news and his all-boy team are challenged when the network hires a female reporter. This movie had a few laughs for us, but I'm just not in love with the lead actor (Will Ferrell), who I tend to find a bit loud. Some people swear by this movie, though. Definitely worth a watch. Old School DVDOld School
      2003 | USA | Laughs: 5.5 (Chuckle) | imdb: 7.1
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A thirty-year-old rents a house on a college campus. His buddies bully him into starting a fraternity. On first viewing (2011), I stopped there (about half an hour into the film) as it seemed to me that the movie kept getting worse every minute. Eleven years later, a trusted friend raved about the movie, and I thought I'd give it a second chance.

And indeed that time it made me smile a lot. The first time around, I must have assumed it was one of these raunchy comedies for horny young males, but it was much tamer than that. There was even a cute love story.

In short, give it a try.

To stay in business, the owner of a gym enters his handful of staff and clients into a dodgeball competition. A few laughs make this worth a watch despite the weak plot and characters. (Last viewed: May 2011)

Four Christmases DVDFour Christmases
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 4.0 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 5.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Before they can fly away on their exotic vacation, a couple who hate family commitments must spend a day touring the Christmas gatherings at his dad's, her mom's, his mom's and her dad's. A friend who often has similar tastes really likes this movie, so I had high hopes for it. Sadly, I didn't laugh. At the start, most of the humor seems to derive from physical violence being inflicted on one of the characters by his brothers. I had already noticed while watching old Laurel & Hardy films that I no longer find it funny when someone gets hit on the head. As the movie matures, I find that the situations are not that comical and the acting not that great. There certainly was potential for funny scenes in the tradition of Meet the Parents, but it didn't happen. The difference in rating between my friend and I shows me again how personal laughter is. Whether one laughs often has to do with how much one can relate to a situation. I haven't been to a Christmas party or gathering in over twenty years, so maybe I am just "deaf" to some situations that will be very funny to you. That being said, my lady friend (who is far more attuned to Christmas) didn't laugh either—but perhaps that was by contagion from my non-laughing. (Last viewed: October 2012)

Wedding Crashers DVDWedding Crashers
      2005 | USA | Laughs: 3.1 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.9
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Two buddies have perfected a routine whereby they crash weddings and hit on attractive singles. The beginning was a bit hard to watch because the two men kept referring to a list of rules (e.g. "rule number 21"), which was both idiotic and instantly unbelievable. Apart from that, this is a decent romantic comedy (as that largely appalling genre goes) that will probably make you smile and perhaps laugh once or twice. Things get interesting when the friends board a boat to spend the weekend with the bride and her wealthy family, evoking a distant taste of Meet the Parents, which also featured Owen Wilson. The Watch DVDThe Watch
      2012 | USA | Laughs: 2.0 (Just Awful) | imdb: 5.7
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This movie scores points for casting Richard Ayoade from The IT Crowd. Apart from that, it's another chapter in the decline of the American empire. A group of concerned citizens form a neighborhood watch to solve a grisly murder mystery, and soon run into nasty extra-terrestrials. Ben Stiller is the best he's been in a long time, while Vince Vaughn is at his worst—possibly after completing a class in overacting. Jonah Hill and Ayoade do their best. None of this matter: the script is below third-rate. You really don't have to watch this kind of trash: stay sane and give the film wide berth. (Last viewed: May 2013)

Couples Retreat DVDCouples Retreat
      2009 | USA | Laughs: N/A (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 5.5
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Four couples spend a week in an exotic resort for couple therapy. It felt like watching a lot of therapy, which is uncommon in the movies. A good film from that standpoint, just not a particularly funny one. (Last viewed: April 2012)
