As this is a light-hearted movie rather than the kind of comedy that makes you laugh, it does not rank high on this site. That being said, I found the movie far more enjoyable than the IMDB rating would suggest. An American in Chili travels with some local friends to a remote beach for a psychedelic session with the San Pedro cactus. The character development is superb. Michael Cera plays an excellent jerk as he interacts with a young lady who calls herself Crystal Fairy. The movie will not appeal to all, but anyone who has attended rainbow gatherings will be able to attest that the character and culture of Crystal Fairy are absolutely authentic—and that was enough to make me smile. I'm not qualified to say how true to type the Chileans were, but they looked very real too. In many ways this is as much a documentary as a tale. The landscapes are beautiful but I'm glad someone was doing the traveling on my behalf. (Last viewed: December 2013)

Promedio Rojo posterPromedio Rojo
      2004 | Chile | Laughs: 0.8 (Just Awful) | imdb: 5.4
      who was involved?

This movie tries to pattern itself after the age-old high-school romp formula found in the comedy catalogs of countries as diverse as the USA, France and Turkey.

Even if you speak Spanish, the language they speak here will be all but unintelligible unless you are Chilean. ¿Cachai? Sipó.

But apart from the fact that a great deal was lost on me, I'm confident stating that the movie is awful on its own demerits, which include plot, dialog, acting, cinematography, sound and editing, among others.

Que Pena Tu Vida posterQue Pena Tu Vida
      2010 | Chile | Laughs: 0.8 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 5.7
      who was involved?

After about fifteen minutes, I gave up on this movie because I found it incomprehensible. I'd heard native Spanish speakers joke that Chilean is a different language — and had dismissed that when listening to Chileans in interviews or documentaries, whose formal register didn't strike me in any particular way. But this movie (full of informal language) confirmed the stereotype.

To be honest, I could have slowed the tape down to eighty percent speed and managed: the language issue was the cop-out I gave myself to interrupt a 'relationship flick' that looked truly awful.
