      2005 | Turkey | Laughs: 2.8 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.4

This movie is basically about a gang of criminals with good hearts, a nice family who wants to get even after discovering they bought a stolen car, and romance.

It's not terribly funny by Western standards (apologies to Turkey for drawing the East-West line at the Bosphorus in the context of comedy) but it's cute and light-hearted, and the sweeping helicopter views of Istanbul and its beautiful outskirts were just what I needed in order to feel warm on a Winter day. The Chaos Class Is Waking Up (Hababam Sınıfı Uyanıyor) posterThe Chaos Class Is Waking Up (Hababam Sınıfı Uyanıyor)

Every once in a while, a talented director takes a concept that a movie hadn't fully developed and makes a sequel that far surpasses the original. That's not what happened here, but at least it's not worse.

The innovation in this installment is that Mahmut Oca sponsors one of his former grade school students to join the Chaos Class, where he gets infected by the prevalent atmosphere. The writers focused even more of the writing on the Inek character than before — while he seems to play an important part in nearly every scene, most of the other boys are devoid of substance.

Other titles in this series:

The Chaos Class
The Chaos Class Failed the Class
The Chaos Class Is on Vacation

      1976 | Turkey | Laughs: 2.5 (Chuckle) | imdb: 9.0

The sequel to The Chaos Class improves on the failed original. It's a bit simple for what we've come to expect of comedy (one of the big jokes is that one of the guys' nicknames is "Inek", i.e. "Cow") and the ending was heavy, but I found the movie enjoyable overall, although it certainly never brought me beyond the chuckle point.

I'll soon try to review The Chaos Class Is Waking Up as well as The Chaos Class Is on Vacation.

Entelköy Efe Köye Karşı posterEcotopia (Entelköy Efe Köye Karşı)
      2011 | Turkey | Laughs: 1.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.6
      who was involved?

A group of Istanbul tree huggers buy ruins in a small village to create an eco-commune. After a brief honeymoon period between the 'hippies' and the locals, friction arises when the villagers support the proposed construction of a coal plant.

This cute romantic comedy didn't really make me laugh, but it brought back memories of people in Turkey who are very dear to my heart and of their own journey with eco-tourism. (Last viewed: December 2018)

Eyyvah Eyvah posterEyyvah Eyvah
      2010 | Turkey | Laughs: 1.2 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.0
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A grown man who lives with his grandparents and earns a living by playing the clarinet at wedding parties becomes infatuated with the nurse-next-door. I was willing to settle for that simple plot and already considering a summary such as "if all you're after is a trip to a sunny land where people have simple problems (at least on film), this may be a good option." But the movie takes a left turn early on, and our man sets off to Istanbul in search of his father.

This is far from being the kind of comedy that will have you roaring with laughter, but it's cute.

In Turkey, the movie was successful enough to warrant a couple sequels as of date. Presumably the romantic quest resumes in the next installment. (Last viewed: December 2018)

Pek Yakinda Coming Soon posterComing Soon (Pek Yakinda)
      2014 | Turkey | Laughs: 1.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.4
      who was involved?

A Turkish comedy with an 8-plus rating? I had to watch this.

In order to save his marriage, a man contrives to produce a movie in which his wife stars, unaware of his involvement. This is a light-hearted movie that feels more like a long sitcom than a comedy feature. It's sweet, but it didn't make me laugh, so I'd only recommend it if you're interested in watching it for cultural reasons—which I was. (Last viewed: August 2015)

The Chaos Class poster Hababam SınıfıThe Chaos Class (Hababam Sınıfı)
      1975 | Turkey | Laughs: 0.0 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 9.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The theme of a class of misfits is a successful one in comedy. In the States the high-school or college comedy movie is a whole genre (try Van Wilder or She's The Man), of which the Police Academy franchise can be seen as a derivative. France has the Sous-Doués series, Germany has the Goethe movies.

This is a theme that I tend to enjoy, so I looked forward to that Turkish rendition of it. Sadly, and despite its inflated imdb ratings (no doubt fake — 9.4 as of January 2019), it seemed to me that this movie was unfit to make anyone over the age of eight laugh. The characters are likeable enough, but the humor is below basic.

The next installment in the series, The Chaos Class Failed the Class, might be a little better. I'll soon try to review The Chaos Class Is Waking Up as well as The Chaos Class Is on Vacation.

Also in the series:
The Chaos Class is fretting over
The Chaos Class: Bye Bye
The Chaos Class Goes Abroad
The Chaos Class in the Military
The Class of Chaos 3½
