Micmacs DVDMicmacs (Micmacs A Tire-Larigot)

This is an artsy movie in a carnival-character, circus bohemian, cartoonish kind of way. That was never my thing, and I didn't laugh, so I didn't enjoy the film. But I can see how it would appeal to some people I know, because in that style, it is well made. (Last viewed: November 2012)

The Phantom of Liberty posterThe Phantom of Liberty (Le Fantôme de la Liberté)

      wikipedia | who was involved?

I hesitated to add Bunuel movies to the site because at no moment do they try to make you laugh. And yet it's hard to say there is anything "serious" about many of them, so I understand how they often end up classified as a comedies. To say there is nothing serious in this film sounds derogatory and wholly fails to describe it. Indeed I have no idea to describe it, except to say that it is a work of art and deserve to be seen. But not in the hope of laughing, although a chuckle or two may come. (Last viewed: July 2014)

Flashback posterFlashback

      wikipedia | who was involved?

A friend roped me into watching this period movie — never my favorite — with the promise of laughs, and I half-convinced myself to do so only because it appeared to feature Gad Elmaleh.

The story is that of a ruthless female lawyer sent by some kind of god to various times past to gain perspective on the long fight to establish women's rights. Sadly, Gad appears only briefly. I smiled a few times, and (I'm ashamed to say) chuckled at the bit involving Pierre Curie, the movie's peak from the comedy standpoint, which doesn't say much.

That said, the film is well-intentioned, so if you're a teenage girl or have a certain tolerance for below-average acting and plots that seem like drafts, you might find it worth watching.

      2011 | France | Laughs: 1.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 5.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Two French half-brothers who have little appreciation for their Caribbean heritage find themselves transported into the past where they experience slavery first-hand. While the movie didn't make me laugh, the original premise and the humorous moments kept me watching. (Last viewed: August 2014)

      1968 | France | Laughs: 1.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.1
      who was involved?

A young woman pulls her aunt out of her retirement from a life of crime to retrieve the loot that was stolen from her. This is a charming, entertaining and well-paced movie whose style of narration is entirely original. This comedy is to be watched as an art piece—it won't make you laugh, but it's worth a watch.       who was involved?

To change things around, a billionaire captain of industry hires a streetwise barber. This "odd-couple" movie is watchable but entirely forgettable. They gave Pierre Richard a serious role, and on the humor side the movie is extremely flat. (Last viewed: July 2014)

Un Aller SimpleOne-Way Ticket (Un Aller Simple)
      2001 | France | Laughs: 1.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 4.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This is movie is misclassified as a comedy, but it's a decent (and underrated) movie featuring Jacques Villeret from The Dinner Game. Here he plays a government employee who must escort a young man "back to his native Morocco"—without realizing that the young man has never set foot in that country. The landscapes and music are terrific, and even if the plot doesn't have much tension it's pleasant enough to amble along with Jacques and his two able companions. (Last viewed: July 2014)

PotichePotiche
      2010 | France | Laughs: 0.8 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

After her husband has a heart attack, a lady takes the reins of his factory—which used to be her father's—and shows herself far more capable than all around her seemed to think. This is a decent feel-good movie (rather than the kind of comedy that makes you laugh) with actors who have faced each other before over their long careers. A decent piece of entertainment if you're not expecting too much. (Last viewed: July 2014)

99 Francs DVD99 Francs
      2007 | France | Laughs: 0.5 (Just Awful) | imdb: 7.3

A cartoonish collage of moments in the last days of a self-absorbed advertising executive's life. Neither funny nor pleasant to watch. For my taste, this was a complete waste of time. (Last viewed: November 2012)

Iznogoud posterIznogoud
      2005 | France | Laughs: 0.5 (Just Awful) | imdb: 3.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This adaptation of a French series of comic books is just as awful—perhaps more—than its rating. I decided to try it because of my fondness for Jacques Villeret, the lead actor from The Dinner Game. After watching and cringing for a solid twenty minutes, I skipped to all the bits featuring Villeret. Spare yourself the effort, it's not worth it. (Last viewed: August 2014)

Un Petit Boulot posterOdd Job (Un Petit Boulot)
      2016 | France | Laughs: 0.1 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

After being out of a job for two years, a man agrees to kill a woman for money, then reluctantly starts making a career out of it. This movie didn't make me laugh, but it was entertaining enough to stay with for the duration—perhaps only because I like Romain Duris, who was effective in comedies such as Heartbreaker and Populaire. Delusions of Grandeur DVDDelusions of Grandeur (La Folie des Grandeurs)
      1971 | France | Laughs: 0.1 (Just Awful) | imdb: 7.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

An adventure comedy set in Spain in the 16th century. Perhaps this movie earned it high imdb rating because of its high-budget production and famous cast—famous in France at the time of release, that is. I didn't find it funny at all and gave up after thirty minutes. In the medieval genre, the perfect antidote to this dreadfully empty movie might be the second season of The Black Adder. Tais-Toi Quand tu Parles! posterShut Up When You're Talking! (Tais-Toi Quand tu Parles!)
      1981 | France | Laughs: 0.0 (Just Awful) | imdb: 4.5
      who was involved?

This movie has a terrific title—and that's the only good thing I can say about it. A man with a James Bond complex is mistaken for a genuine spy. Sounds good? Go watch something like The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe. I had seen Aldo Maccione in a couple of half-decent roles and hoped this movie, in which he stars, would showcase his talents. Sadly, I could not get past the 25th minute. It's unwatchable. (Last viewed: July 2014)

Les Grands Ducs DVDLes Grands Ducs
      1996 | France | Laughs: 0.0 (Just Awful) | imdb: 5.9
      who was involved?

The first fifteen minutes of this film are so excruciatingly bad that I had to give up in disgust. The plot apparently follows three seniors whose theatrical career has seen better days as they embark on a tour of small French towns with a low-quality play. The opening scenes were noisy and over-theatrical in a grand old French tradition—or perhaps it is a Franco-English tradition, as the same moronic display can be found in Monty Python's worst skits, to take only one example. Avoid at all cost. (Last viewed: December 2013)

Tous les Soleils DVDSilence of Love (Tous les Soleils)
      2011 | France | Laughs: N/A (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This French film doesn't have much of a plot, but it stays with you because it has strong characters—two brothers of Italian extraction (one a teacher, the other a stay-at-home revolutionary). There is a predictable father-daughter theme, as well as an uninteresting romantic interest. But that's okay because the characters are excellent, and the view into the local culture fascinating.
