Quick Change DVDQuick Change
      1990 | USA | Laughs: 9.8 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 6.8

I love it that this little-known movie, recommended by a reader of this page, made us laugh more than most of the big-name comedies that take up all the shelf space at the video stores. (That's what this page is all about!) What can you do, Bill Murray is a legend. The plot can have holes as large as a frozen pizza, there can be a dull minute of mindless action, but you don't care because you know you'll be laughing in just a moment. Oh, what's it about? Three friends pull off a genius bank robbery. Now they can't get out of New York. (Last viewed: December 2011)

Groundhog Day DVDGroundhog Day
      1993 | USA | Laughs: 9.8 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 8.0
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A weather newsman (Bill Murray) wakes up in a small town to find out that today is an exact repeat of yesterday—only no one else seems to notice. Soon, he realizes that no matter what he does, the next day he will wake up at the beginning of that same day. He dies a hundred times, but in the morning it's still Groundhog Day. Pure genius, a gift to mankind. (Last viewed: Dec 2008 August 2011)

The Dinner Game DVDThe Dinner Game (Le Dîner de Cons)
      1998 | France | Laughs: 9.6 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 7.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A group of upper-class Parisian friends amuse themselves by inviting people they find ludicrous to weekly dinners where the guests don't realize they are the joke of the party. When the group invites a man who has built a replica Eiffel tower with matchsticks, everything goes wrong. If you can handle the French subtitles, you will be rewarded with one of the funniest movies ever.

The Hollywood adaptation (Dinner for Shmucks, 2010) has funny moments, but it's not in the same league. The Indian remake, Bheja Fry, is unbearably dull. (Last viewed: May 2007 August 2011)

Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy DVDKids in the Hall: Brain Candy
      1996 | Canada | Laughs: 8.8 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.9
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

This movie by the Canadian comedy group "Kids in the Hall" was made two years after the end of their TV show. It's one of these rare cases when the movie is even better than the show. The plot: against the advice of its scientists, a pharmaceutical company rushes a "happy drug" to market before properly testing it. For sheer quirkiness this movie belongs on the same shelf as Python movies, but it's much, much funnier. Don't miss it. (Last viewed: April 2012)

Office Space DVDOffice Space
      1999 | USA | Laughs: 8.6 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Life in a cubicle… the movie. Perhaps it inspired The Office, the UK TV series that spawned a US series by the same name. Very funny during the scene-setting phase. Once the movie acquires a plot, it loses steam on the laughs. For my taste, they could have made the entire movie without a plot—it would only have enhanced the study of pointlessness. What about Bob DVDWhat about Bob
      1991 | USA | Laughs: 8.6 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.0
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A clingy new patient stalks his psychiatrist all the way to the doctor's lakeside holiday home. The family loves Bob, but the doctor wants him gone. Richard Dreyfuss and Bill Murray are excellent opposite each other. I love this movie—it has me grinning from beginning to end. Side-note: Bill Murray gets to practice his Heimlich Maneuver as in Groundhog Day, but not as expertly. (Last viewed: Nov 2008 October 2012)

Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery DVDAustin Powers, International Man of Mystery
      1997 | USA | Laughs: 8.5 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.0
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Frozen in 1967, A British spy and his nemesis meet again in 1997. Not really funny, but really really fun, with one or two LOL moments. This movie is so incredibly fresh and original. Whoever is responsible for it (his name is Mike Myers) is a creative genius. (Last viewed: Jun 1997 August 2009)

Coneheads DVDConeheads
      1993 | USA | Laughs: 8.4 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 5.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A couple of aliens with pointy heads crash their space craft somewhere in America. As they await the rescue ship scheduled to pick them up after 18 years, they adapt to their new home. The poster may not inspire you to watch this film, but you have to ask yourself if you want to look smart tonight or if you want to laugh. The aliens are sometimes hard to understand, but what you do understand is funny. I enjoyed the guest appearances of comedy greats such as Adam Sandler and Seinfeld's Kramer and George. One of those low-rated movies that can really pull the laughs. (Last viewed: January 2012)

Rushmore DVDRushmore
      1998 | USA | Laughs: 8.3 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

An incredibly enterprising 15-year-old has carved a parallel universe for himself at the prestigious private school he attends. When he befriends a female teacher with a British accent and a successful entrepreneur (an older version of himself?), Max's universe soon turns on its head. They had to turn Bill Murray about three quarters of the way down to make room for our young hero, and it's somehow delicious to take Bill one sip at a time. I was surprised at how much I laughed the second time I saw Rushmore. Beyond the laughs, I just love the story, the directing, the photography, the atmosphere. The sweetness of the characters somehow reminds me of another school-years movie, Ferris Bueller. (Last viewed: December 2011)

The Spy Who Shagged Me DVDThe Spy who Shagged Me
      1999 | USA | Laughs: 8.3 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.6
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

The first Austin Powers sequel. The jokes are starting to head in the direction of the bathroom, but still very funny. One wishes there weren't so many barely disguised ads in this movie. By the way, don't bother watching Goldmember, the third instalment in the series. (Last viewed: September 2009)

Half Baked DVDHalf Baked
      1998 | USA | Laughs: 8.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Three friends try to raise 100,000 dollars to bail their fourth roommate out of jail. How? By selling dope.

Many pot movies are hard to watch, but this is one of the few that stands out. Great plot, funny, cute, and pretty smart—except for the unnecessary crass final line. A fine piece of counterculture.

The Castle DVDThe Castle
      1997 | Australia | Laughs: 7.8 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Made on a disgustingly low budget of $19,000, this is one of the most popular Australian movies ever. Threatened of expulsion by developers seeking to expand an airport, a family fights to keep its home. This classic underdog story is a study in Australian culture—a must-see for anyone seeking a primer on Australian society. In fact, for one Australian I've met who has "risen" from modest roots to an executive position in a big city, the endearing portrayal of the unworldly Kerrigan family is "too close to home". Three Men and a Leg DVDThree Men and a Leg (Tre Uomini e una Gamba)
      1997 | Italy | Laughs: 7.6 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.6
      who was involved?

Three friends are on their way to a marriage in southern Italy. Two of them are married to two daughters of the tyrannical hardware store tycoon who employs them. Now the third friend is marrying the third daughter. Naturally, the trip takes much longer than expected. This movie felt long at times (my lady companion who lived in Italy for ten years explained that Italians like to give time for emotional moments), but it made me laugh often, and it was refreshingly clean. It seemed that only half of the script made it to the subtitles, and you could tell that if you understood the language you might be rolling on the floor. But even without understanding the language, there is enough comedy in the situations to amuse you. The movie left me with a soft spot for these three friends, so it will be a pleasure to see them again in five years. Or perhaps sooner: apparently, this trio (known as Aldo, Giovanni & Giacomo) has made many films together. I enjoyed That's Life (Così è la Vita). Chiedimi Se Sono Felice is not worth watching except for one very funny moment. (Last viewed: November 2011)

Analyze This DVDAnalyze This
      1999 | USA | Laughs: 7.4 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Shaken by his mentor's demise, a mobster (Robert De Niro) seeks the counsel of a psychoanalyst (Billy Crystal) who reluctantly gets acquainted with the underworld. The string of uncomfortable situations and the interplay between the two main characters keeps you smiling. Don't bother watching the sequel, Analyze That. (Last viewed: September 2010)

Kiler Machulski 1997 DVDThe Hitman (Kiler)
      1997 | Poland | Laughs: 7.4 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.6
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A taxi driver protests when he is arrested in place of a killer. When no one believes him, he starts to play along. Comedies from outside the major movie-producing centers are sometimes a bit rough, but this Polish movie was a great watch. I laughed and smiled even though I had to read the subtitles—it must be even funnier if you understand the language. (Last viewed: October 2010)
