About Jonah

( wikipedia | imdb )
I haven't yet written a blurb about Jonah.

Jonah Hill is said to have been born on Tuesday 20 December 1983, which would make him 40 years, 3 months and 8 days old (if this date is accurate and he is alive today).

A fun dip into the world of the young guys who work for a video game company. An attractive female project manager walks in to get a game back on track, the genius programmer tries to seduce her, and the main tester moves in with his grandma and her roommates. The punchline after the dance game contest gave me a good laugh; smiled throughout the rest. (Last viewed: September 2010)

In desperate need of redemption, the crew of a struggling wilderness show follows a lead to film Big Foot in his South American habitat. I was drawn to this movie because it features the main actor from Grandma's Boy. Sadly, in this film Allen Covert's role was nowhere near as interesting.

Overall, it's probably fair to say that this is a terrible movie. Nevertheless, it has some very funny moments. I laughed out loud a few times and had a moment of hard laughter shortly before the fifteenth minute. Come to think of it, if you watch that far, you might want to quit while you're ahead: turn the movie off and go do something else. (Last viewed: November 2015)

I tend not to enjoy films where grown-up males spend their time talking dirty about women, such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin. But when the dirty talkers are youngsters who have not yet experienced adult activities, as in Superbad, I tend to chuckle. Two kids who were dreaming of their high-school graduation party somehow find themselves at a party with 25-year-olds, and in other situations in the "grown-up world". For what it is, this movie is well put together. If you have a stomach for adult themes and foul language, you will laugh at least once and smile a lot. (Last viewed: February 2012)

A comedian at the top of his career (Adam Sandler) hires a comedian who is starting out to write jokes for his stand-up show. He has cancer but recovers midway through the movie, so we get a whole second film as a bonus. Not only did this movie make me laugh several times, it had a strong plot with characters that behave like real people (well, mostly).

Edit:
After watching Funny People a second time nine years later, I feel that this movie is an underrated little gem.

First off, the cast is spectacular. Adam Sandler has some funny bits — and some that flop, but that's the role, a thankless one. Seth Rogen is at his best. Jonah Hill is thrown in as a two-pack bonus. Several of the supporting actors made a name for themselves as comedians during the following years, such as Aubrey Plaza and Aziz Ansari from Parks and Recreation. Torsten Voges (someone I'd never heard of) is funny as a humorless German doctor. Jason Schwartzman and Leslie Mann are perfect for their roles and keep the smiles going. Eminem has a short but terrific intervention. And as a late treat in the final part of the movie, we're introduced to a new character played by Eric Bana, who featured in The Castle, perhaps the best Australian comedy of all times.

There is a prescient joke about Robin Williams slitting his wrists (at around 19'40" on my tape, during Rogen's first stand-up set). There are many other things to like. Are there some things to dislike? Yes. But overall, this is a really special film which I hope I remember to watch again ten years from now.

Two young cops are sent undercover to a high school to infiltrate a drug ring. Things have changed in the seven years since they graduated high school—the nerd becomes the cool guy, and the cool guy becomes the geek. This is not a laugh-out-loud movie, but it is funny enough to watch once, and it earns points for several original scenes, such as a car chase with a driving school's learner car, where trucks full of gas refuse to explode. I would watch the sequel. (Last viewed: October 2012)

I'm not part of the sizable population of viewers who hate Ricky Gervais, so I was prepared to laugh as this movie had a good premise: in a world where everyone always tells the truth, one man discovers lying. Sadly, the execution was poor. For instance, the truth-tellers in Ricky's world feel compelled to blurt out things such as "I hate this job" or "you look awful" without prompting when they meet strangers, which borders on the pathological, and is certainly not the same as not lying. The movie would have worked better if the characters kept their mouths shut a lot more, speaking when asked, like "normal people". From that basis, there was a lot of room for comical situations. Skip unless you're a huge fan of Ricky's. (Last viewed: April 2012)

Given a remote control that lets him fast-forward through the unpleasant moments of life, an ambitious architect (Adam Sandler) soon finds himself jumping through years at a time. It feels like the studio, armed with a strong concept and a reliable comedian, didn't bother writing a funny script. Too bad. (Last viewed: July 2010)

A record label employee gets assigned the mission of escorting a particularly difficult rock star from his London home to the Greek theater in Los Angeles for a major concert. This starts out funny but then just turns into a pretty good movie, with strong and attaching characters, so you forget that you started watching because you wanted to laugh. Russell Brand, whom I'm never seen before, impressed me with his excellent, believable performance. Jonah Hill was very good too. Warning: rampant adult themes, recurring crassness and gross-out scenes, presumably to please the 21st century crowd. (Last viewed: Sep 2012 September 2019)

I like Steve Carell, and if anyone can pull off the role of a 40-year-old who is still a virgin, it is he, but this movie doesn't really make me laugh. In some ways, this is a cute story. In other ways, it's another boring excuse to show a group of men talking dirty. If you're stuck at home with the flu and run out of things to watch, this film will help you kill a couple of hours. Otherwise, skip it. (Last viewed: February 2012)

A group of Hollywood celebrities barricade themselves in a house on the day of the Apocalypse. Apart from a few good lines from Jonah Hill, much of the humor in this film stems from the grotesque nature of the plot and situation. Usually, when a movie is bad that is because it fails at what it sets out to do, but that is far from the case here. In essence, it seems to me that the producers tried to make a "cult movie" (something that is so bad that it becomes good for a certain audience), and they achieved that goal to perfection. If you're into cult movies you will probably enjoy this. I'm not, hence the low rating. (Last viewed: October 2013)

To get his mother out of a bind, a young man agrees to babysit her friend's three children. Soon the situation goes from merely bad to being chased by a gang of drug dealers. This movie scores points for casting Richard Ayoade from The IT Crowd. Apart from that, it's another chapter in the decline of the American empire. A group of concerned citizens form a neighborhood watch to solve a grisly murder mystery, and soon run into nasty extra-terrestrials. Ben Stiller is the best he's been in a long time, while Vince Vaughn is at his worst—possibly after completing a class in overacting. Jonah Hill and Ayoade do their best. None of this matter: the script is below third-rate. You really don't have to watch this kind of trash: stay sane and give the film wide berth. (Last viewed: May 2013)

To fend off his anxious parents, a young man who has been rejected by several colleges prints out an acceptance letter from a fake college with a fake website. Things get out of hand when a hundred "students" offer him tuition. This movie is surprisingly not crass. By the same token, despite everyone's good intentions, it is surprisingly unfunny. I can't think of a good reason to watch it. (Last viewed: July 2015)

Eight weeks after a one-night stand with a dude who, without the alcohol, wouldn't be far from her nightmare date, a TV presenter finds herself pregnant. A cute story overall, a few laughs, but also way too much frat-house humor for my taste. It also felt like the movie lasted four hours. Would not watch again. (Last viewed: October 2011)
