About Woody

( wikipedia | imdb | dmoz )
I haven't yet written a blurb about Woody.

Woody Allen is said to have been born on Sunday 1 December 1935, which would make him 88 years, 3 months and 27 days old (if this date is accurate and he is alive today).

Three stars. Even if you're allergic to Woody Allen's output of the last few decades (which I am), I suggest you overcome your reluctance and watch this movie, Allen's best. A New Yorker finds himself embroiled in the power struggles of a South American dictatorship. No mistake about it, in Bananas, Allen emulates the style of New Wave film master Jean-Luc Godard in movies such as Breathless and Pierrot Le Fou. The sad conclusion: Allen was a whole lot better when he was imitating Godard than when he started imitating himself. (Last viewed: August 2009)

As a kid, I loved some of Woody Allen's movies. Later, I developed an allergy to him. This film is the one exception I've found. Frozen in 1973, Woody Allen comes back to life 200 years later and becomes involved in the revolution against the Great Leader. Fun and cute. A few cringe lines from Woody at the beginning, but he gets into the role as soon as Diane Keaton comes on the scene. (Last viewed: August 2009)

An aging physics genius with a deep distaste for humankind (Larry David) reluctantly becomes involved with a twenty-one-year-old Southern belle. Larry David gives Allen's whining monologues a much more bearable tone than Allen's own. It's a match made in heaven: I cannot stand most of Allen's movies of the past twenty years, but I did enjoy this one. Do not expect a believable plot… Woody Allen never is, probably because he is too inward-focused to understand the world of people. Good chuckles, might even watch again some day. This "crime comedy" by Woody Allen is tight and well cast. It has a few good chuckles (no belly laughs), but I was too nervous with the crime story to truly enjoy it. I don't know what happened to Woody Allen in the 21st century, but since about 2005 he seems to have matured tremendously—perhaps that's what turning 70 does to you. In the 1990s I had become allergic to his films, but I've found several of his late productions to be polished, accomplished films. (Last viewed: January 2012)

Woody Allen took a Japanese spy movie and changed the soundtrack, turning it into a comedy. It's goofy, easy on the eyes, and if you're in a tolerant mood it will make you smile. (Last viewed: October 2012)

This might be a great feel-bad movie, but it's definitely not a comedy. Misclassified. (Last viewed: January 2014)
