Super Troopers

To avoid being shut down, a Vermont highway patrol unit competes with the local police to impress the Governor. The humor largely derives from the cops' inappropriate behavior. This made me laugh the first time around, but not on the second watch.
Edit: I watched the movie again after seven years to see how it compares with the sequel. Can't believe that much time had gone by! The good news is that the movie is so forgettable that after seven years it's a brand new movie. The bad news is that the 2018 version of my brain is incompatible with the 2011 version, so that it took over half an hour until the first chuckle. Don't hesitate to give the sequel a go though, you might find it superior. (Last viewed:

Get Him to the Greek

A record label employee gets assigned the mission of escorting a particularly difficult rock star from his London home to the Greek theater in Los Angeles for a major concert. This starts out funny but then just turns into a pretty good movie, with strong and attaching characters, so you forget that you started watching because you wanted to laugh. Russell Brand, whom I'm never seen before, impressed me with his excellent, believable performance. Jonah Hill was very good too. I Love You Man

Faced with the fact he doesn't have any male friends, a man who is about to get married tries to get a buddy, and soon succeeds. A cute story with perfect Los Angeles weather and a fun cast (but no side-splitting scenes). It was nice to see a bit of Andy Samberg from Hot Rod. In the main roles, Paul Rudd, Jason Segel and Rashida Jones all did a great job. Well worth a watch. (Last viewed: September 2012)

Bad Teacher

A high-school teacher does the bare minimum to get by in the classroom until a rich guy marries her, but tries hard to earn the cash to pay for the breast implants that will attract Prince Charming. Cameron Diaz had done a great job in a recent comedy, What Happens in Vegas, and I wondered if she could carry a movie in the main role. She certainly does (with the help of an excellent supporting cast). The first thirty minutes were weak, not by the actors' fault but owing to a deficient script and awful lipstick. The movie's second half was a pleasure to watch, full of smiles and chuckles. Parents, watch out for adult themes. (Last viewed: October 2012)

Sixteen Candles

With all those movies that depict clueless teenagers, wouldn't it be refreshing to see one that shows clueless parents for a change? This is exactly the premise of this movie. An entire family (parents, siblings, grandparents) forget that one of their daughters / sisters / granddaughters turns sixteen today.
The movie is refreshingly racist and misogynistic. (Before you flame me, remember that as a gay Asian female I can say whatever the heck I want.) (Before you accuse me of not being a gay Asian female, may I remind you how unenlightened a viewpoint that is and that what matters is what I feel inside?)
I should mention that the film is cruel with people who have unusual physical characteristics, and that it comes close to condoning the taking advantage of young women who are passed out from alcohol.
I'm not sure there was anything funny in the plot itself… But who needs more for an evening's entertainment than this comical time voyage to the peak of the era when straight white males ruled the Earth?

Four Christmases

Before they can fly away on their exotic vacation, a couple who hate family commitments must spend a day touring the Christmas gatherings at his dad's, her mom's, his mom's and her dad's. A friend who often has similar tastes really likes this movie, so I had high hopes for it. Sadly, I didn't laugh. At the start, most of the humor seems to derive from physical violence being inflicted on one of the characters by his brothers. I had already noticed while watching old Laurel & Hardy films that I no longer find it funny when someone gets hit on the head. As the movie matures, I find that the situations are not that comical and the acting not that great. There certainly was potential for funny scenes in the tradition of Meet the Parents, but it didn't happen. The difference in rating between my friend and I shows me again how personal laughter is. Whether one laughs often has to do with how much one can relate to a situation. I haven't been to a Christmas party or gathering in over twenty years, so maybe I am just "deaf" to some situations that will be very funny to you. That being said, my lady friend (who is far more attuned to Christmas) didn't laugh either—but perhaps that was by contagion from my non-laughing. (Last viewed: October 2012)

Happiness

The lives of three sisters and connected characters are placed under the microscope in this intimate movie which makes you both cringe and smile. In that way, it is in the line of some of Woody Allen's films and can be seen as a precursor to TV series such as The Office. No laugh-out-loud moment, but a hypnotic and entertaining watch.
Happiness is the origin of the famous line "I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing with you." It is one of the movies that helped establish Philip Seymour Hoffman, who will be missed. (Last viewed:

A down-on-his-luck actor is given the lucrative assignment of delivering a mysterious suitcase to a mysterious man in a desert outpost.
The first five minutes rubbed me the wrong way, but once we left Los Angeles and left a couple of annoying character behind the movie grew on me. If you like frantic comedies, this one is not for you — it's more of a relaxed, offbeat ride.
Can't say that I laughed, but I'm fairly sure I chuckled. Worth a watch if you have nothing better to sample.

Working Girl

A young woman from a working class background resorts to large-scale deception in order to get past her hypocritical female boss and rise through the ranks of her New York law firm.
While this movie is by no means a laugh-out-loud comedy, it made me smile a lot and offers more than its mere comedic aspects: it oozes 1980s charm; its social commentary gives a historical perspective on various struggles; and its cast of stars who look impossibly young — among whom Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Spacey.
A perfect watch if you're in the mood for a laidback comedy with feminist undertones.

Confess, Fletch

In this sequel to the Chevy Chase movies, Fletch becomes a murder suspect upon arriving in Boston to investigates the theft of several paintings belonging to the family of this Italian girlfriend.
The tone was just right, and while the movie probably isn't as funny as the original, I found it very enjoyable.

Dumb and Dumber To

The first half-hour of this sequel (twenty years later) to the original Dumb and Dumber is barely watchable. I persevered because I vaguely remembered that the original also started weakly. This time, our couple of likeable losers embark on a mission to track down a long-lost daughter in the hope she will donate a kidney. The movie does improve slightly after a while, but it does feature the worst performance by Jim Carrey I have ever seen. Don't waste your time: this "comedy" will make you sad. Hot Rod

With the help of his gang, an aspiring stuntman raises money to pay for his step-dad's surgery. I find this movie astonishingly underrated. This is a "smile-and-chuckle" more than a "laugh-out-loud" movie, but the characters and story are good, and the cast is refreshing. And let's not forget an excellent 1980s-dominated soundtrack. I enjoyed every minute of Hot Rod and I will watch it again with pleasure. (Last viewed: September 2012)
