Sorry to Bother You posterSorry to Bother You
      2018 | USA | Laughs: 2.8 (Smirk) | imdb: 6.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

An African American becomes a star telemarketer by putting on a "white voice". When he gets promoted he must choose between his teammates and his need for cash.

The first half was very original and funny, although not in a laugh-out-loud kind of way. One of the more interesting movies of the year. (Last viewed: October 2018)

Little Fockers DVDLittle Fockers
      2010 | USA | Laughs: 2.7 (Just Awful) | imdb: 5.5

With this third instalment, Meet the Parents reaches the unavoidable fate of an excellent movie whose success the studios try to stretch over multiple sequels. A few laughs, but a waste of perfectly good characters. (Last viewed: May 2011)

Grown Ups DVDGrown Ups
      2010 | USA | Laughs: 2.7 (Just Awful) | imdb: 5.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

I like Adam Sandler, but this movie is an exercise in self-indulgence—and utter garbage. We're usually pretty generous about watching movies that don't start well (some take a while to develop) but we found this one unwatchable and stopped after 26 minutes. It felt like watching four friends hanging out and cracking mediocre jokes. I'm sure you can find three people to do that with (and actually laugh in the process): you don't need Adam Sandler and his buddies. (Last viewed: April 2012)

Flirting with Disaster DVDFlirting with Disaster
      1996 | USA | Laughs: 2.6 (Just Awful) | imdb: 6.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

The only disaster in this movie is the movie itself, but there's no flirting. When a movie's script is not believable, if that's for the purpose of making me laugh, I don't mind at all. This film's script is loose to the point of falling apart, but it doesn't pull its weight in the laughter department. In the one funny scene, Mel (Ben Stiller) and his wife gently approach two strangers who might be related to Mel, but the two strangers turn into rogues whotry to beat up their two potential relatives. (It sounds violent, but it's not.) The movie is certainly not worth watching for that one scene. Its one redeeming feature, in my view, is that it was probably a crude rehearsal for Meet the Parents, which would come four years later. (Last viewed: November 2011)

Game Night posterGame Night
      2018 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.0
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A group of friends who gather weekly to play games gets treated to a lifelike high-end game that brings them into a world of real gangsters.

No real laughs but a few chuckles—an entertaining if forgettable watch. (Last viewed: May 2018)

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid DVDDead Men Don't Wear Plaid
      1982 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A beautiful woman hires a detective to investigate her father's death. Soon, you realize that many of the segments where someone plays opposite Steve Martin were taken from other films—black-and-white crime flicks from the 1940s and 1950s. The humor is laid with a light touch, so you won't burst out laughing, but the movie is beautifully put together and it's fun to watch. (Last viewed: September 2012)

Billy Madison DVDBilly Madison
      1995 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Just Awful) | imdb: 6.4
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

To take over the role of his retiring father as head of a major hotel chain, a young man who has lived a life of ignorant merriment must return to school and graduate through the twelve grades in under six months. I usually like Adam Sandler. He can be funny when he's a little goofy, but in this role he has set his goofiness level to over-the-top-and-off-the-charts. It is simply unbearable. At first I thought that perhaps I wasn't liking the movie because it was aimed at kids, but there are too many adult themes for that to be the case. It's just bad. (Last viewed: October 2012)

One, Two, Three DVDOne, Two, Three
      1961 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Just Awful) | imdb: 7.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

During the Cold War, the head of Coca-Cola in West Berlin must host the big boss's 17-year-old daughter, who falls in love with a handsome party member from East-Berlin. This movie is from a time when it was considered good acting to yell for the entire length of a movie. That's what the main character does, and it's really hard on the ear. There's also that awful, never-ending circus music that's been used in a million films since sound was introduced to the cinema. If you forgive that and the smug cold-war American propaganda, you're left with a fairly amusing farce—but no laughs. The story would have gone down a lot better if everyone had been more chilled out. This is Hollywood at its worst. (Last viewed: October 2012)

Slackers poster 2002Slackers
      2002 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Chuckle) | imdb: 5.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This college campus movie features a group of young men who have perfected the art of cheating and other scams. Threatened of being denounced by a fellow student, they agree to help him hook up with the young woman he has been stalking.

As college movies go, this one is fairly amusing without being excessively crass. That being said, it's far from being a side-splitting number.

The Big Sick posterThe Big Sick
      2017 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.6
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A stand-up comedian of Pakistani origins cannot tell his family about his "white" girlfriend because he is expected to go along with his mom's wish for an arranged marriage. Although this sweet movie had no laughs, it had a lot of humor and a fine script. I relished spending more time with one of the actors from the TV show Silicon Valley—in fact the entire cast did a fine job. (Last viewed: September 2017)

Ingrid Goes West posterIngrid Goes West
      2017 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 6.6
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A disturbed young woman works herself into the life of a social media star. This was not a laugh-out-loud comedy, but it may have been a worthwhile watch for the glimpse it offers into a world that I'm grateful not to be a part of. (Last viewed: November 2017)

A Lot Like Love posterA Lot Like Love
      2005 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.6
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The paths of a young man and a young woman cross over six years, but the time never seem right for them to enter a relationship together. This was not the kind of comedy that makes you laugh, but as a romance it is tight, with pleasant performances by Ashton Kutcher and his female counterpart.

Recommended as a movie to watch as a couple when you're in the mood for smiles.

Tenure posterTenure
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.1
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A professor at a small college is up for tenure, and discovers with anxiety that he will be competing with a recent hire from an ivy-league school.

This movie takes so long to get going that for a moment I had to wonder if it was Canadian—no disrespect implied, I enjoy Corner Gas as much as the next northerner.

I nearly gave up, but there was just enough to keep me watching (decent cast, endearing characters), and the second half was far superior to the first, starting with the sales seminar scene. Overall, probably not worth your time, not because the movie is bad, but because there are better ones to choose from. (Last viewed: April 2018)

Car Wash DVDCar Wash
      1976 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.2
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Set around a car wash business as the title suggests, this movie feels a bit like a sitcom condensed to the ninety minutes of a feature film. The antics of the staff are not hilarious, but the movie is fun for a number of reasons—the 1970s texture, the gritty working class setting, the African-American culture, a sighting of George Carlin and a pumping soundtrack. Car Wash! (Last viewed: March 2013)

God Bless America DVDGod Bless America
      2011 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A fed-up man and an angry teenager decide it's time to rid America of all the people who "deserve to die", such as those who use their cell phones in movie theaters. Apart from one scene that's too heavy on the blood for my taste, this can be a pleasant watch if you go into it expecting to see something from the "cult" shelf—quirky rather than mainstream. If you can tune in to the director's sense of humor you may find the film funny, though it's not laugh-provoking material. And for those who haven't stepped inside the United States in a long time, some scenes offer a worthwhile look at the state of decay in that mighty country's culture. (Last viewed: March 2013)
