This was recommended to me by a clerk in a video store who said it was one of the rare movies where she couldn't stop laughing. I don't have quite the same sense of humor, but maybe you do. If you watch this movie in a generous mood, you're sure to enjoy it because it is fun, and at times very funny. It's refreshing to watch a high school comedy that doesn't run on sex and alcohol. Two friends introduce their high school to Link, a young man from the Ice Age whom they found while digging a pool. As silly as it sounds… and that's a good thing. (Last viewed: May 2010)

A recently orphaned underachiever must rescue his late dad's auto parts factory from the claws of his gold-digging mother in law. Starts slow but eventually gets to third gear, with a good range of comedic situations that will probably have you smiling throughout. (Last viewed: January 2013)

Sleeper DVDSleeper

As a kid, I loved some of Woody Allen's movies. Later, I developed an allergy to him. This film is the one exception I've found. Frozen in 1973, Woody Allen comes back to life 200 years later and becomes involved in the revolution against the Great Leader. Fun and cute. A few cringe lines from Woody at the beginning, but he gets into the role as soon as Diane Keaton comes on the scene. (Last viewed: August 2009)

Clueless posterClueless
      1995 | USA | Laughs: 6.1 (Chuckle) | imdb: 6.8
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A high-society Los Angeles high-school girl tries her best to improve the lives of those who surround her. I'm told by someone with a bit of culture that this movie is an adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Emma, perhaps the best ever made. I can't say, but I do know that I was entertained and chuckled more than a few times.

I can't quite believe that it took me all of 25 years to watch this movie. I guess 1995 feels like yesterday, so in that sense it was only a day. If you haven't seen it either, treat yourself, it has aged tremendously well.

Me, Myself And Irene DVDMe, Myself And Irene
      2000 | USA | Laughs: 6.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.6
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A State trooper who has let others walk all over him for too many years acquires a split personality disorder. His other self is rather rough, which is handy when time comes to rescue a damsel in distress. Even funnier than Jim Carrey's decent performance is the dynamics between his three black kids. There's lots to like in this movie, though it's a little too unpolished to embrace whole-heartedly. (Last viewed: October 2012)

Van Wilder DVDVan Wilder
      2002 | USA | Laughs: 6.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.4
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

The most popular man on campus, who is so in love with college that after seven years he still doesn't want to graduate, falls for the girl who has been assigned to interview him for the school paper. Despite a few gross-out scenes, this movie is not crass by today's standards. I found it quite pleasant. I enjoyed seeing Ryan Reynolds, whom I'd only recently discovered in The Change-Up, as well as Kal Penn from Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. Well worth a watch. (Last viewed: October 2012)

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates posterMike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
      2016 | USA | Laughs: 6.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.0
      wikipedia | who was involved?

If you can stomach some foul language and adult themes, this movie will probably give you a few good laughs. Given the task of finding suitable dates to bring to a wedding in Hawaii, two brothers advertise on Craig's list and recruit two young women who turn out to be as much of a disaster as they are. The movie is uneven but has enough good moments to make it worth a watch. (Last viewed: September 2016)

In a World... posterIn a World...
      2013 | USA | Laughs: 6.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.7
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The daughter of Hollywood's voice-over king tries to break into the business. Far from supporting her, her dad has a male protégé. This sweet-funny movie offers a strong female character and a glance at an interesting profession. It's not a laugh-out-loud comedy, but it made the three of us who watched it grin much of the time. 7 Days in Hell poster7 Days in Hell

      wikipedia | who was involved?

This mockumentary purports to tell the story of two men who fought a seven-day match at the Wimbledon tennis tournament. Sometimes crude, sometimes subtle, this 45-minute film probably has enough to make most people laugh. Actual tennis celebrities such as John McEnroe make guest appearances. Ace Ventura, Pet Detective DVDAce Ventura, Pet Detective
      1994 | USA | Laughs: 6.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.9
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

I used not to be able to stand Jim Carey's facial contortions. Since then, I've recognized the man's genius, and I've gotten to a place where I can enjoy watching him and not ignore the faces, which still do nothing for me. I waited a long time to watch this movie because I assumed that it was for children, but I was wrong. In fact, there are several adult scenes in there. Nice photography (a Miami art deco look throughout), a good smile throughout and several good laughs. (Last viewed: August 2009)

Never mind what they say about sequels being awful, Chevy Chase is in good form in this second Fletch as he battles villains in Louisiana. A chance to smile for ninety minutes, hear the classic Fletch theme tune and detect fake from real Southern accents. (Last viewed: April 2010)

Dumb and Dumber DVDDumb and Dumber
      1994 | USA | Laughs: 5.9 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.3
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

After losing their jobs, two buddies travel to Aspen to return a briefcase which, unbeknownst to them, contains the ransom money for a beautiful woman's husband. A bit slow in the beginning, but the second half, after the duo arrives in Aspen, is very funny. In this movie, Jim Carey doesn't make faces. (Last viewed: August 2009)

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels DVDDirty Rotten Scoundrels
      1988 | USA | Laughs: 5.9 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.4
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Two stars. A scam artist (Michael Caine) passes himself off as a monarch to extract funds from naive wealthy women on the French riviera. He sees his turf invaded by an American scam artist of smaller caliber (Steve Martin). Sweet and fun, with perhaps one or two LOL moments, but the terribly weak ending ruins the overall rating. Without spoiling the end, I'll just say that we can't buy the situation reversal at the end because it contradicts the emotions on the face of one of the lead characters throughout the rest of the movie. Whatever Works DVDWhatever Works
      2009 | USA | Laughs: 5.8 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.1
      wikipedia | who was involved?

An aging physics genius with a deep distaste for humankind (Larry David) reluctantly becomes involved with a twenty-one-year-old Southern belle. Larry David gives Allen's whining monologues a much more bearable tone than Allen's own. It's a match made in heaven: I cannot stand most of Allen's movies of the past twenty years, but I did enjoy this one. Do not expect a believable plot… Woody Allen never is, probably because he is too inward-focused to understand the world of people. Good chuckles, might even watch again some day.
