Spoof spy movie featuring Steve Carell, the boss in the US version of The Office. Much of the humor draws from the spies exposing their everyday human side. Good laughs! Only reproach: it's a bit of a work-out for the eyes—I didn't need all the special effects. (Last viewed: September 2010)

An ambitious professional receives the mission of inviting an "idiot" for dinner to entertain his boss. Many laughs in this Hollywood adaptation of The Dinner Game, one of the funniest movies ever, but the US version pales in comparison to the French original. Well, it's Hollywood, and they just had to show the dinner—easily the weakest scene in the movie; it truly is a dinner for shmucks, and the shmucks are the Hollywood people who asked for the dinner scene. Oh, and the movie also had to feature an utterly stupid romance. On the redeeming side, I was thrilled to see Jemaine Clement, a brilliant New Zealand actor (Flight of the Conchords, Eagle vs Shark). Bruce Almighty DVDBruce Almighty
      2003 | USA | Laughs: 7.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.8
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Bruce, a man who complains that God is persecuting him, finally meets God, who gives him the job of being God to see if he can do it better. After playing with his super powers, Bruce, who is only given a small section of Buffalo (New York) to start with, finds out that the job is not as easy as it sounds. This movie makes me chuckle a lot. The one scene that made me laugh out loud actually features Steve Carell in the lead, but Jim Carrey does a great job. For my taste, the ending scenes are a tad on the exalted side, but given the theme it could have been a lot worse. (Last viewed: Feb 2004 September 2012)

Anchorman DVDAnchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

In the 1975, The king of San Diego's TV news and his all-boy team are challenged when the network hires a female reporter. This movie had a few laughs for us, but I'm just not in love with the lead actor (Will Ferrell), who I tend to find a bit loud. Some people swear by this movie, though. Definitely worth a watch. In the early 1980s, the crew of Anchorman reunites in New York City for the launch of the first 24-hour news TV station. We put this on at one in the afternoon on a grey Saturday when my lady friend had the flu, and it was suitably decadent. This movie will not go down in history as the funniest comedy ever, but it has its share of laughs and it's a good ride if you're willing to be entertained. (Last viewed: March 2014)

Date Night posterDate Night
      2010 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 6.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Once a week, to overcome the routine, a married couple with two turbulent kids hire a baby-sitter and treat themselves to their "date night"—usually a tame affair at a local family restaurant. One week, on a whim, they drive to nearby Manhattan, where everything goes terribly wrong and they soon find themselves chased by blood-thirsty mobsters. The two lead actors did a good job and the film had funny moments, but there was too much filler in between. The cast cannot be blamed for the tiresome plot. I'd suggest skipping this one. I like Steve Carell, and if anyone can pull off the role of a 40-year-old who is still a virgin, it is he, but this movie doesn't really make me laugh. In some ways, this is a cute story. In other ways, it's another boring excuse to show a group of men talking dirty. If you're stuck at home with the flu and run out of things to watch, this film will help you kill a couple of hours. Otherwise, skip it. (Last viewed: February 2012)

Five stars. Dad is bankrupt, mom wants a divorce, grandpa snorts heroin, uncle Frank has just tried to kill himself, big brother doesn't speak, but everyone piles up in a VW van to bring little sister to a beauty pageant in California. Great story about who we are, and splendid acting, not least by Alan Arkin, who was already an amazing actor forty years earlier in The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming. A teenager spending the Summer in Cape Cod escapes his family by taking a job at a water park. This is certainly not a laugh-out-loud comedy, but it's a good movie in the light-hearted movie. I did have a couple of good laughs thanks to the character of the water park supervisor (Sam Rockwell), who carries the bulk of the film's comedic power. (Last viewed: October 2013)
