Perhaps the second-funniest French comedy ever (after The Dinner Game), starring Pierre Richard and Gérard Depardieu. Pierre Richard plays his trademark character, the clumsy guy. A very cute film with a great number of laughs. Endearing, never nasty. Good English subtitles available online. (Last viewed: Jul 2009 September 2011)

Inspecteur la Bavure DVDInspector Blunder (Inspecteur la Bavure)
      1980 | France | Laughs: 7.6 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A young inspector who entered the force at the bottom of his class finds himself saddled with a journalist who sets up a high-profile scheme to meet a man she fantasizes about, an attention-seeking criminal (Gérard Depardieu). The plot's long set-up (when one gets to know the character) is really funny. As often with this kind of film, when the director decides that it's time for something to happen, the comic value drops near zero, while the action fails to capture your interest. I'll watch it again as the main actor (Coluche) is a delightful comedian. (Last viewed: October 2011)

Tais-Toi DVDShut-Up (Tais Toi)
      2003 | France | Laughs: 6.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.1

French title: "Tais-Toi". A hardened gangster is forced to share his prison cell with a simple-minded, kind-hearted thief bent on being his friend. After the many laughs of the first half, the film develops a lifeless car-chase and shoot-them-up plot—yawn. Well worth watching more than once if you stick to the jail sequence. This is the second time director Francis Veber uses Depardieu in a "botched-robbery-duo", but the first time around (in The Fugitives) Depardieu played the hardened bank robber. To avoid being made redundant, a dull accountant lets his employers believe he is gay to make them worry of being accused of discrimination. The modern French office building where most of the film is shot makes the film visually unstimulating. You may chuckle but you are unlikely to laugh hard. (Last viewed: Oct 2002 June 2011)

Les Fugitifs DVDThe Fugitives (Les Fugitifs)

On the day of his release from prison, an unlucky bank robber is taken hostage in a bank robbery by a man who can barely tie his shoelaces. One of three comedies starring Gérard Depardieu and Pierre Richard—not nearly as funny as La Chèvre, but a cute story that fans of these two actors will enjoy watching once. It's also ten times better than the Hollywood remake (Three Fugitives) by the same director. As in many of Francis Veber's comedies, the "clown" is called François Pignon. (Last viewed: April 2012)

French movie that reunites Pierre Richard and Gérard Depardieu from La Chèvre, but without reigniting the laughs. The script is to blame, not the actors. Two men travel to the south of France to retrieve a teenage boy, whom they both take to be their son. Cute, a few laughs. Worth a watch if you're not in a demanding mood and don't mind French subtitles. (Last viewed: July 2010)

The Annuity DVDThe Annuity (Le Viager)

      who was involved?

In 1930, a Parisian doctor thinks he has stumbled on the perfect scheme. He convinces one of his patients (then 59 years old) to retire in a house the patient has bought on the Riviera, and to sell that house to the doctor's brother against a sum to be paid yearly as long as the man lives. Certain that the man only has two years to live, the doctor believes he has cooked a great deal for his brother. However, the climate of southern France seems to benefit the supposedly dying retiree. This movie that spans forty years is a really fun watch—though definitely in the light-hearted category, as it's designed to make you smile rather than laugh. (Last viewed: September 2012)

This is a film adaptation of a volume in the famous series of comic books. It didn't make me laugh (the humor mostly relies on wordplay) but it was funny and entertaining. The movie has good rhythm and it's beautiful to look at—I was impressed with colors and texture. Adapting a comic book for the screen is a tall order. This is one of the rare successes. This film is an example of what tends to happen when you allow an excellent stand-up comedian write and direct a feature film. I guess Gad Elmaleh needed direct experience to learn that writing a script for an array of characters requires different skills from writing a show for himself alone. I like Gad's work a lot, both as a stand-up and in films such as The Valet, but Coco deserves nothing more than its 3.1 IMDB rating—probably a record low, of all comedies whose IMDB pages I have seen. PotichePotiche

      wikipedia | who was involved?

After her husband has a heart attack, a lady takes the reins of his factory—which used to be her father's—and shows herself far more capable than all around her seemed to think. This is a decent feel-good movie (rather than the kind of comedy that makes you laugh) with actors who have faced each other before over their long careers. A decent piece of entertainment if you're not expecting too much. (Last viewed: July 2014)
