Meet the Parents DVDMeet the Parents
      2000 | USA | Laughs: 9.7 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 7.0
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A man plans to propose to his girlfriend, but first he must meet her parents. You cringe and laugh as Greg (Ben Stiller) does everything—wrong—to secure the approval of her tough dad (Robert De Niro), a former CIA agent. The movie has several laugh-out-loud moments, but it is also funny throughout even if you sometimes want to scream rather than laugh, as you watch in disbelief, horrified by how Greg's situation keeps worsening by the minute, fighting the impulse to cover your face as his plight reaches new levels of awful. All the minute psychological observations that build the story's tension and humor are right on target and make this movie a delightful little marvel.

If you've enjoyed it, don't miss the 1992 original.

The movie made me laugh as much as Meet the Parents, perhaps more. Seen from the viewpoint of this page (movies that make you laugh), it is therefore as good as the original, a rare feat for a sequel. However, it must be said that overall, it is not as good a movie. Meet the Parents has a story that you'll never forget. Meet Fockers makes you laugh, but it doesn't have a story apart from the simple set-up: Greg, his fiancée and her parents travel down to Florida to meet Greg's parents. In the original movie, the discomfort Greg felt as he tried to please Jack was potent and contagious. In the sequel, the discomfort is second-hand as Greg worries about his parents' conduct with Jack. You also don't have the joy or discovering Jack's character (Robert De Niro) for the first time—in fact they've made Jack less human. On the other hand, the movie has other treats in store: Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand, who play Greg's parents. Forget the sequel, Little Fockers. (Last viewed: August 2010)

Owen Wilson was credited as writer in the following film.

Rushmore DVDRushmore
      1998 | USA | Laughs: 8.3 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

An incredibly enterprising 15-year-old has carved a parallel universe for himself at the prestigious private school he attends. When he befriends a female teacher with a British accent and a successful entrepreneur (an older version of himself?), Max's universe soon turns on its head. They had to turn Bill Murray about three quarters of the way down to make room for our young hero, and it's somehow delicious to take Bill one sip at a time. I was surprised at how much I laughed the second time I saw Rushmore. Beyond the laughs, I just love the story, the directing, the photography, the atmosphere. The sweetness of the characters somehow reminds me of another school-years movie, Ferris Bueller. (Last viewed: December 2011)

Ben Stiller makes a great Starsky. I don't know if Owen Wilson makes a great Hutch, but he makes a great partner for Ben Stiller in this homage to the classic 1970s cop TV series. The series' formula was action with a smile. Here, the ratio has been inverted: the film is definitely a comedy, though it sports an entirely bearable drug-deal-plot as an excuse to see the two comedians do donuts in their gorgeous red-and-white Gran Torino. An armored car driver gets seduced into robbing his employer. The cast is excellent and the script gives them plenty to work with. One of the legacies of Meet the Parents is that it is always a pleasure to revisit Owen Wilson as a jerk. The movie entertained us and gave us a few laughs: don't let the low imdb rating put you off, this is a decent little comedy. (Last viewed: June 2017)

During the production of a Broadway play, the lives of a call girl, the director and several characters get entangled to the highest degree. I'm usually not a supporter of Hollywood's habit of making self-referential movies (as though everyone in the world worked in show business); neither do I usually much like movies with a strong theatrical feel. But I found this little movie thoroughly entertaining. It was nice to see Owen Wilson, and everyone else did a fine job too. It wasn't one of those that makes you laugh, but it was funny and it hit the spot. (Last viewed: June 2015)

      wikipedia | who was involved?

Two women give their sex-starved husbands a week off from their marriage. It's less a comedy than a tragedy (not a bad one) about the plight of males trapped by their biology and the roles carved for them in society. In that respect, this might be worth a watch, but not if you're hoping to laugh. (Last viewed: September 2012)

Wedding Crashers DVDWedding Crashers
      2005 | USA | Laughs: 3.1 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.9
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Two buddies have perfected a routine whereby they crash weddings and hit on attractive singles. The beginning was a bit hard to watch because the two men kept referring to a list of rules (e.g. "rule number 21"), which was both idiotic and instantly unbelievable. Apart from that, this is a decent romantic comedy (as that largely appalling genre goes) that will probably make you smile and perhaps laugh once or twice. Things get interesting when the friends board a boat to spend the weekend with the bride and her wealthy family, evoking a distant taste of Meet the Parents, which also featured Owen Wilson. With this third instalment, Meet the Parents reaches the unavoidable fate of an excellent movie whose success the studios try to stretch over multiple sequels. A few laughs, but a waste of perfectly good characters. (Last viewed: May 2011)

A lonely cable guy (Jim Carrey) decides he wants to become one of his customers' best friends. Starts out silly (with some good laughs), ends up psycho. I wanted to watch a comedy, mama, not a stalker movie! Only watch if you're ready to zap. (Last viewed: June 2010)

Three birding enthusiasts compete to be the one who will spot the most bird species in a calendar year. The commitment to the competition takes a toll on their professional and family lives.

Jack Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wilson made a balanced triangle, and the story-line was unusual. While this is certainly not a laugh-out-loud comedy (the rare bird that this site aims to spot) this was a very cute movie that made me smile a lot. (Last viewed: November 2016)
