After losing his job, a chronic sociopath moves in with his best friend and his wife. In their small apartment, the little man soon takes a lot of space, always asking what's for dinner and bringing home a different girl every night. Without intending to, he gradually wrecks his friends' lives. If you enjoyed the 1980s and tolerate subtitles, then try out this little gem from the past. (Last viewed: June 2012)

After a pair of unlikely cops make a routine call at a posh house, one of them becomes obsessed with the lady owner and starts tailing her instead of doing his job. This is a lovely 1980s comedy with very funny moments, particularly in the first half, as you might expect, and fine performances by Michel Blanc and Jacques Villeret, though the latter is underused. Vastly underrated—I was glad to discover it. (Last viewed: July 2014)

      who was involved?

Two friends have written a script for a pure-hearted romantic film. One of them, who shoots commercials and wants to further his career, reluctantly agrees to sell the script to a producer of adult films. There are many of laughs in the series of shocks and misunderstandings that ensue. As usual, the second half of the film is less funny, but it still works.

This is not an adult comedy film—such as those pathetically unfunny movies that seem to have been so popular at one time in Italy and Australia. Rather, it is a very funny comedy that happens to deal with the pre-production phase of an adult film.

Given the circumstances, the amount of nudity is minimal (although for my taste there was still too much.) In contrast to a great number of comedies that come out of Hollywood these days, this one is never really vulgar—largely because the characters do not speak of adult themes gratuitously. In this age of trashy movies, that such a movie was made with such a delicate touch seems extraordinary: pulling it off was a high-class balancing act. Highly recommended if you can handle a small dose of adult themes. (Last viewed: July 2014)

Not high art but definitely worth a watch because it works, and you will laugh. The original Les Bronzés (literally, The Tanned Ones) may be a better movie, but it has fewer laughs. (Last viewed: July 2009)

      who was involved?

Two friends (one a frail hypochondriac, the other a muscular musician) hitchhike to Paris in the hope of getting work. Penny-less, they soon end up in a dilapidated building with African squatters. This movie has very funny moments—thanks to a strong performance by Michel Blanc, who plays his usual comedic character (an improved Woody Allen) to perfection. The film is weakened by the romantic side-story but it is still well worth a watch. (Last viewed: August 2014)

French Fried Vacation DVDFrench Fried Vacation (Les Bronzés)

This classic French comedy follows a batch of vacationers during their eight-day stay in a holiday village in Africa. As ever, some find it easy to hook up, some find it harder. Even with the distance of time, the situations feel very real, and they're funny to watch. The movie is also full of the pranks and entertainment you would expect on such a package vacation. It didn't make me laugh out loud, but I found it highly entertaining. The sequel (which takes place at a ski resort) is stronger in the laughter department. Not so the third installment. A doctor whose wife recently left moves in next door to a woman who is having romantic troubles. If you think you already know what's going to happen (as I would if you told me this is the plot), you will be pleased to discover that the movie doesn't follow the expected formulas. I found this little film funny (but not hilarious) and delightfully surprising, unlike those comedies where the action runs by the numbers. (Last viewed: September 2013)

Italian movie with Roberto Benigni. A weak introduction, good moments as it ramps up, then it gets so crass that we stopped watching. (Last viewed: August 2009)

28 years after the original Les Bronzés, the same team is reunited at an Italian holiday resort. I chuckled twice, so on the comedy level this clearly isn't worth watching. However, there are two great things about this movie. First, it is simply fascinating to see what happens to the human body in 28 years. I watched this sequel the night after watching the original again, and that was really interesting. Second, the theme song, Baila Morena, makes you want to get up and dance. After being out of a job for two years, a man agrees to kill a woman for money, then reluctantly starts making a career out of it. This movie didn't make me laugh, but it was entertaining enough to stay with for the duration—perhaps only because I like Romain Duris, who was effective in comedies such as Heartbreaker and Populaire.       who was involved?

The first fifteen minutes of this film are so excruciatingly bad that I had to give up in disgust. The plot apparently follows three seniors whose theatrical career has seen better days as they embark on a tour of small French towns with a low-quality play. The opening scenes were noisy and over-theatrical in a grand old French tradition—or perhaps it is a Franco-English tradition, as the same moronic display can be found in Monty Python's worst skits, to take only one example. Avoid at all cost. (Last viewed: December 2013)
