The Dinner Game DVDThe Dinner Game (Le Dîner de Cons)
      1998 | France | Laughs: 9.6 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 7.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A group of upper-class Parisian friends amuse themselves by inviting people they find ludicrous to weekly dinners where the guests don't realize they are the joke of the party. When the group invites a man who has built a replica Eiffel tower with matchsticks, everything goes wrong. If you can handle the French subtitles, you will be rewarded with one of the funniest movies ever.

The Hollywood adaptation (Dinner for Shmucks, 2010) has funny moments, but it's not in the same league. The Indian remake, Bheja Fry, is unbearably dull. (Last viewed: May 2007 August 2011)

Not high art but definitely worth a watch because it works, and you will laugh. The original Les Bronzés (literally, The Tanned Ones) may be a better movie, but it has fewer laughs. (Last viewed: July 2009)

wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

To avoid being made redundant, a dull accountant lets his employers believe he is gay to make them worry of being accused of discrimination. The modern French office building where most of the film is shot makes the film visually unstimulating. You may chuckle but you are unlikely to laugh hard. (Last viewed: Oct 2002 June 2011)

The Dinner Guest DVDThe Dinner Guest (L'Invité)
      2007 | France | Laughs: 5.4 (Watch Once) | imdb: 5.6
      who was involved?

A man who has been unemployed for three years is offered an exciting position, but he has to overcome one final obstacle: a dinner in his own home with the chief of personnel. The new neighbor happens to be an image consultant and graciously offers to help. The most exciting thing about this movie is the unspoken promise of reliving the highs from the amazing Dinner Game, which stars one of the same actors. The promise cannot be fulfilled, of course. Neither Thierry Lhermite nor Daniel Auteuil—both competent actors—have what it takes to carry a laugh-out-lout comedy: they are more suited playing opposite born stand-up comedians. Nevertheless, it's a good effort and the movie has enough humor to warrant watching once. (Last viewed: October 2012)

French Fried Vacation DVDFrench Fried Vacation (Les Bronzés)
      1978 | France | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This classic French comedy follows a batch of vacationers during their eight-day stay in a holiday village in Africa. As ever, some find it easy to hook up, some find it harder. Even with the distance of time, the situations feel very real, and they're funny to watch. The movie is also full of the pranks and entertainment you would expect on such a package vacation. It didn't make me laugh out loud, but I found it highly entertaining. The sequel (which takes place at a ski resort) is stronger in the laughter department. Not so the third installment. My Best Friend's Girl DVDMy Best Friend's Girl (La Femme de mon Pote)
      1983 | France | Laughs: 4.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 5.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This movie is set in a ski resort, where a disc-jockey with a plain physique falls in love with the girlfriend of his best friend, who is classically handsome. I had never seen this story in a movie before, at least not told in this way. The movie is surprisingly good, and it features two actors who are well-suited for each other. One of them, Coluche, was a comical genius. (Last viewed: September 2012)

      1982 | France | Laughs: 2.2 (Just Awful) | imdb: 7.6

French. The few laughs are not worth the ninety minutes of crass dialogue. Happily skip. (Last viewed: July 2009)

French Fried Vacation 3 DVDFrench Fried Vacation 3 (Les Bronzés 3: Amis pour la Vie)
      2006 | France | Laughs: 2.0 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 3.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

28 years after the original Les Bronzés, the same team is reunited at an Italian holiday resort. I chuckled twice, so on the comedy level this clearly isn't worth watching. However, there are two great things about this movie. First, it is simply fascinating to see what happens to the human body in 28 years. I watched this sequel the night after watching the original again, and that was really interesting. Second, the theme song, Baila Morena, makes you want to get up and dance.
